Dog-Adoption Process
Our adoption process focuses on bringing people and animals together. Our adoption counselors are on site to answer questions and help connect you with your new best friend.
We offer same-day adoptions, meaning if you meet all the adoption requirements, you can leave with your new dog that same day. Get started by viewing our available dogs.
In-Person Adoption
Drop by the San Francisco SPCA Adoption Center to meet our dogs and chat with our adoption counselors.
- Visit Our Adoption Center: The SF SPCA Adoption Center is located at 250 Florida Street in San Francisco. No advanced appointment or application required.
- Meet The Dogs: Our Adoptions team will introduce you to our available dogs and answer any questions you may have. If you’d like to conduct an introduction with your resident dog, please bring your dog with you.
- Make Your Decision: If you find the perfect dog, our team will verify your information and finalize your adoption. Please note that we cannot hold animals for you, and your adoption is not complete until you submit your payment.
- Take Your New Dog Home: Once your adoption is complete, you get to take your new best friend home.
Virtual Adoption (New!)
Our new virtual adoption program lets you find your new best friend from the comfort of your own home.
- Fill Out Form: Fill out our Virtual Adoption Form and submit your information.
- Meet the Dogs: Our Adoptions team will schedule a virtual meet-and-greet with available dogs, and our team can answer any questions you have.
- Make Your Decision: If you find the perfect dog, our team will verify your information and finalize your adoption virtually. Please note that we cannot hold animals for you, and your adoption is not complete until you submit your payment.
- Pick Up Your New Dog: Select a time to pick up your new best friend.
This program is still in puppy school—eager to learn and getting better each day. We appreciate your patience as we master these new tricks.
Adoption Requirements
- You must be at least 18 years of age
- Have a government-issued photo ID
- Provide proof of address

*View our online Puppy Parent Orientation and pass the quiz to receive 50% off puppy adoption fees.
San Francisco residents pay a $30 San Francisco dog license fee at the time of adoption.
