When Trudi enrolled her beloved Ragdoll cat, Montana, in the San Francisco SPCA Sido Pet Protection Program in 2009, she hoped it was a promise that would never have to be fulfilled.
Like so many devoted pet guardians, Trudi wanted peace of mind about her pet’s well-being. If Montana ever outlived her, she wanted to know he would be safe, cared for, and loved until he found another family.
The Sido Pet Protection Program ensures that if an enrolled cat or dog outlives their guardian, the SF SPCA will step in to provide medical and behavioral care, foster placement if needed, and adoption services to help them find a new loving home. After adoption, Sido pets also receive lifetime veterinary care at the SF SPCA Veterinary Hospital, helping ensure they continue to thrive for years to come.
Sadly, Trudi passed away in January 2024, and 17-year-old Montana came into our care.
Recovering at the SF SPCA
After losing the person he’d loved for nearly his entire life, Montana was understandably frightened. The shelter was filled with unfamiliar sights, sounds, and smells, but beneath his shy exterior was an affectionate cat who quickly won over our staff and volunteers.
As Montana settled in, our veterinary team gave him the care he needed. Because Trudi’s declining health had made it difficult to keep up with his grooming and medical needs, his fur had become severely matted, and an examination revealed arthritis in his hips and advanced dental disease. He received a haircut to remove the painful mats, medication to keep him comfortable, and dental surgery that removed 22 diseased teeth, relieving pain and discomfort.
A new home for Montana
After a few weeks of healing, Montana was ready to begin the next chapter of his life. Just three days after becoming available for adoption, he found his new family.
Heather and Brian had recently lost their 21-year-old cat and immediately felt a connection with Montana. Today, he’s thriving in their home.
“Montana is truly one-of-a-kind,” Heather says. “He sleeps between us every night, and in the mornings, he likes to rest on my chest and pat my face with his paw.”

When he’s not cuddling with Heather and Brian, Montana can often be found curled up in a sunny spot, soaking up the warmth. According to Trudi’s close friend Donna, Trudi had always dreamed of building him a sunny catio.
“I know if there’s anything that would put [Trudi] at peace,” Donna said, “it’s this: knowing that Montana is indeed being taken care of.”
Montana’s story is exactly why the Sido Pet Protection Program exists. None of us can predict the future, but we can make plans that protect the pets who depend on us. By enrolling your cat or dog, you’re making a promise that if they ever outlive you, they will receive compassionate care, expert medical treatment, and every opportunity to find another loving home, just like Montana did.
