Fun Summer Activities for Cats and Dogs

Summer is here, let the fun begin! Whether you have a dog, a cat, or both, there are lots of ways to keep your pets happy, active, and safe this season.

Remember that pets can get hot quickly. Always make sure they have shade and cool water, and watch for signs of overheating, like heavy panting, drooling, or weakness. If your pet seems too hot, take them inside for a break.

Summer activities for dogs

When the weather is warm, many dogs are ready for adventure. Here are some ways to enjoy summer together:

Water activities

Some dogs love to swim, but others don’t. Start by wadding in a few inches of water and never force your dog to swim. A doggy life jacket can help keep them safe if they’re new to swimming. If your dog loves water, try:

  • Running through sprinklers
  • Splashing in a kiddie pool
  • Chasing a hose stream

Games and sports

Active dogs love:

  • Fetching a ball or a Frisbee
  • Sniffing out hidden treats in a Kong toy or snuffle mat
  • Practicing agility skills like jumping through hoops or weaving around cones

In San Francisco, you can visit off-leash parks and beaches like Fort Funston, Crissy Field, or Bernal Heights Park for a fun change of scenery. Be sure to bring treats and toys for positive play and watch your dog’s body language to make sure they’re feeling comfortable.

Traveling with dogs

Before heading out on summer adventures:

  • Make sure your dog is up to date on flea and tick prevention.
  • Bring cool water and a bowl.
  • Pack a damp towel to cool your dog’s paws or belly if they get hot.

Summer activities for cats

Cats may love to nap in the sun, but they still need exercise and play to stimulate their minds and help them stay fit. Aim to play with your cat twice a day for 10-15 minutes to keep them engaged.

Water activities

Many cats enjoy:

  • Batting at dripping faucets
  • Drinking from a water fountain
  • Dipping their paws in water bowls

This behavior helps them stay cool and hydrated—and it can be fun!

DIY toys and games

You don’t need fancy toys to entertain a cat:

  • Paper bags, cardboard boxes, and toilet paper rolls make great toys.
  • Wand toys or fishing pole-style toys mimic the movements of prey. Move them like a bug or a bird to keep your cat interested.
  • Cat trees, window hammocks, and perches give cats places to climb and watch the world. Set up a safe, sunny window with a view of birds, squirrels, and other wildlife.

Traveling with cats

If you’re taking your cat on a trip:

  • Practice short rides in their carrier ahead of time.
  • Use a stress-reducing pheromone spray like Feliway in the carrier to help them feel calm.
  • Bring water, treats, paper towels, and a spare collar with ID.
