Volunteer Opportunities

Volunteer at the SF SPCA
The San Francisco SPCA is remodeling its adoption center to meet the current and future needs of our shelter animals and visitors. We're expecting the project to be completed in May 2014. Highlights of our new adoption center will include an increased capacity so we can adopt out at least 20% more animals each year and a streamlined adoption process that will reduce wait times. We will not be on-boarding new volunteers to work in our adoption center until May 17 2014, when the renovation is close to completion.  Until then we are only recruiting volunteers for the following programs:

Community Cares Program
Trap free roaming Community Cats and help reduce cat overpopulation through Trap, Neuter, Return (TNR)

Foster Program
Volunteer from your own home, where you will care for kittens and puppies that are too young for adoption or give a loving home to animals with a terminal illness.

Animal Assisted Therapy
Volunteer with your own pet, visiting hospitals, nursing homes, and schools.  AAT is also currently seeking volunteers interested in pursuing training for Puppy Dog Tails Reading Program and the Wag Brigade Partnership with the San Francisco International Airport.

Shelter-Medicine
Volunteer with recently arrived cats and dogs to our shelter that are in quarantine and animals undergoing medical treatment.

Shelter-Medicine Volunteers must be able to work under the following conditions:
  • Ability to navigate stairways while carrying up to 50 lbs
  • Comfortable sitting on the floor for extended periods of time and maneuvering in small spaces
  • Comfortable working in a medical environment, around sick and injured animals
  • Able to understand and follow strict disease prevention protocols
  • Able to put on and wear hospital gloves, gowns, and booties
  • Able to work in an environment where regular veterinary and shelter chemicals are used on a daily basis
  • Can commit to a weekly 2 hour scheduled shift for 6 months.
Volunteers must be 18 years old or older and able to make an initial volunteer commitment of two hours per week for six months. Please visit our Youth Programs page to learn more about opportunities for those under 18 years old.

To get started volunteering in one of the programs listed above please RSVP and attend one of our upcoming Information Sessions. Please note, we are not accepting volunteer applications for the adoption center or providing information about adoption center volunteering at this time. If interested in becoming an adoption center volunteer, please check this page in April 2014 for updates on how to become a volunteer in our newly remodeled adoption center. We look forward to working with you!
