When Didi (then known as Chicklet) arrived at the San Francisco SPCA, he and his two siblings, Britches and Wilsey, had more than just their kitten curiosity in common. All three were battling a case of ringworm, a highly contagious fungal infection.
Treating ringworm can be an overwhelming challenge in a shelter setting. However, thanks to our dedicated medical team, specially trained volunteers, and the generosity of our supporters, we were able to give this trio the second chance they deserve.
From treatment to adoption
At intake, each kitten received a full medical exam and was enrolled in our specialized ringworm program, where they received regular baths, medication, and weekly checkups. Each week, trained volunteers gently examined the kittens using a Wood’s lamp—a special blacklight that helps identify fungal infections by making infected areas glow. With the help of this gentle, non-invasive test, our team could track the progress of Didi’s healing and adjust his treatment as needed, all while ensuring he still got plenty of cuddles and socialization.
As he grew stronger, Didi’s playful personality began to shine. By the time he graduated from treatment, he had transformed into a confident, affectionate, and downright charming kitten. The same day he was medically cleared, he found his forever family.
Living the good life
Didi, now an SF SPCA alumnus, is living his best life. “He’s a Velcro cat who loves being close to his sister or his humans,” his adopter shares. With the help of his feline sister Mia, Didi has quickly learned the ropes of being a cat—mastering grooming routines, perfecting his meow, and even picking up a few tricks. He divides his days between joyful chaos (pouncing, digging, and surprise attacks) and deep, worry-free naps in the sun.
Didi and his siblings’ recovery was made possible through our organization’s broader system of care: a coordinated network of services designed to expand access to veterinary support across San Francisco. From our Community Veterinary Clinic and hospital to our specialized shelter medicine programs, we work to ensure every pet gets the care they need, when they need it.
This story is a heartwarming reminder of what’s possible when animals receive the care, time, and love they need to heal. Because of your support, we’re able to care for animals like Didi every single day and help them find their way home. Thank you for believing in the power of second chances and for making Happy Tails like Didi’s possible.
