Adoption Process
Our adoption process focuses on bringing people and animals together. Adoption counselors are on site to answer questions and help connect you with your new best friend.
We offer same-day adoptions, meaning if you meet all the adoption requirements, you can leave with your newly adopted animal that same day. Get started by viewing our available cats and dogs.
In-Person Adoption
Drop by the San Francisco SPCA Adoption Center to meet our available animals.
- Visit Our Adoption Center: The SF SPCA Adoption Center is located at 250 Florida Street in San Francisco. No advance appointment or application required.
- Meet the Animals: Our Adoptions team will introduce you to our available cats and dogs and answer any questions you might have. If you’d like to conduct an introduction with your resident dog, please bring your dog with you. Please note that we only facilitate dog-dog introductions, and we do not conduct dog-cat introductions.
- Make Your Decision: If you find the perfect animal, our team will verify your information and finalize your adoption. Please note that we cannot hold animals for you, and your adoption is not complete until you submit your payment.
- Take Your New Pet Home: Once your adoption is complete, you get to take your new best friend home
Virtual Adoption
Our Virtual Adoption Program lets you find your new best friend from the comfort of your home.
- Fill Out Form: Fill out our Virtual Adoption Form and submit your information.
- Meet the Animals: Our Adoptions team will schedule a virtual meet-and-greet with available animals, and our team can answer any questions you have. Please note that virtual adoptions are not available for kittens.
- Make Your Decision: If you find the perfect animal, our team will verify your information and finalize your adoption virtually. Please note that we cannot hold animals for you, and your adoption is not complete until you submit your payment.
- Pick Up Your New Pet: Select a time to pick up your new best friend.
Adoption Requirements
- You must be at least 18 years of age
- Have a government-issued photo ID
- Provide proof of address
Cat Adoption Cost
$125 Cats
$200 Kittens
younger than five months*
*Fee waived for a second kitten adopted within 30 days.
Dog Adoption Cost
$175 Dogs
$400 Puppies
younger than five months*
*View our online Puppy Parent Orientation and pass the quiz to receive 50% off puppy adoption fees.
San Francisco residents pay a $32 San Francisco dog license fee at the time of adoption.
