When Porkchop (formerly Curtsy) arrived at the San Francisco SPCA from San Francisco Animal Care and Control, she had a few things to take care of before she was ready to find her forever home. Our Shelter Medicine team determined that this sweet, short-faced pup would benefit from losing a little weight and getting some much-needed dental care. Behind that adorable face was a smile that needed attention, including several diseased and damaged teeth.
Porkchop is also a Bulldog, which is a brachycephalic breed. This type of dog, which includes Pugs, Bulldogs, French Bulldogs, Shih Tzus, and Boston Terriers, may be predisposed to breathing difficulties because of their anatomy. They can also be more sensitive to heat and may need extra care for their facial skin folds. For adopters of brachycephalic dogs, understanding these needs can help keep them comfortable, cool, and healthy.
From dental surgery to a new home
Porkchop underwent a dental procedure under anesthesia, during which our team removed 15 diseased teeth and cleaned her remaining teeth. While this may sound like a lot of dental work, it was an important step toward helping Porkchop feel her best and make sure she could eat without discomfort.
Porkchop was adopted shortly after her procedure and got to finish her recovery in the comfort of her new home. Today, Porkchop has a new smile, a new name, and a new home. According to her adopters, she is settling into her new home beautifully.
“Porkchop is settling in well to her new home, and all of us (two humans and one other dog) love her SO MUCH!!” her adopters shared. They also shared that she recovered well after her tooth extractions. These days, she bolts to the door when it’s time for a walk and happily explores her new turf with her family.
Porkchop is also making a splash in her neighborhood, and her adopters told us that “She is so excited to meet dog and human friends! She is a really sweet, gentle, and loving dog. The perfect addition to our family.”
