On June 6, communities across California came together for the third annual California Adopt-a-Pet Day, a statewide celebration of the incredible animals waiting in shelters and rescues.
Created by the San Francisco SPCA in partnership with CalAnimals and the ASPCA, California Adopt-a-Pet Day shines a spotlight on the joy, companionship, and love that shelter animals bring to our lives. Shelters and rescue organizations across the state opened their doors to help more animals find the families they deserve.
This year’s event also received official recognition from Governor Gavin Newsom, who issued a letter highlighting California’s leadership in animal welfare and the importance of adoption in helping shelter animals find loving homes. The Governor highlighted California Adopt-a-Pet Day as a collaborative effort led by the San Francisco SPCA, CalAnimals, and the ASPCA that brings together shelters and communities across the state.
His recognition reflects the growing momentum behind a movement that celebrates shelter animals while also advancing solutions to reduce shelter overcrowding and improve outcomes for animals throughout California.
California Adopt-a-Pet Day at the SF SPCA
Final statewide results are still being calculated, but we’re proud to share that 149 animals were adopted from the SF SPCA during the event. During the day, adopters met cats, dogs, kittens, and puppies of all ages and personalities, creating new connections and helping animals start their next chapter.
The energy at our adoption center was unforgettable. Families, friends, and animal lovers filled our campus—all united by a shared belief that shelter animals make wonderful companions. Every adoption represented a fresh start for an animal and the beginning of a special bond with a new family.
Although this year’s California Adopt-a-Pet Day is complete, the celebration doesn’t end in June. Shelters and rescues across California have amazing animals available for adoption year-round, each waiting for a chance to find a loving home.
