After daydreaming about long walks and couch snuggles, local couple Jeffrey and Alex decided it was time to add a dog to their family. So, they did what many future pet parents do: they headed to the San Francisco SPCA.
That’s where they met Raven.
This gentle, 7-year-old retriever mix came to us from Merced County Animal Services. With his calm spirit and kind eyes, he was easy to fall for. But bringing a dog home is a big decision, and Jeffrey and Alex wanted to think it through.
After talking it over, they both agreed that Raven was the one. They rushed back to our adoption center. But they were too late. Raven had already been adopted.
Disappointed but hopeful, Jeffrey and Alex left their number with our team and asked us to call if Raven became available again. They went home with crossed fingers and hopeful hearts.
A few days later, the phone rang. Raven was back and still looking for his forever home.
The couple didn’t hesitate this time. They made a plan to adopt Raven as soon as Alex returned from an upcoming trip. But while Alex was away, Jeffrey had a fun idea…
A sweet surprise
While Alex was on his trip, Jeffrey returned to the shelter alone and made it official by adopting Raven.
A few days later, Alex walked through his front door after his trip, suitcase in hand, and was greeted by more than just a welcome-home hug. Raven bounded over to Alex with happy barks and a wagging tail.
Alex’s face said it all. He was completely surprised and overjoyed that Raven had beaten him home! Now, Raven enjoys long walks, lazy afternoons, and cuddles on the couch—his favorite spot nestled right between his two dads.
