How to Prep for Surgery

How to PrepAnimals over 16 weeks of age must have their food taken away after 11:30 pm the night before surgery.  Water is okay.  Animals under 16 weeks of age should not be fasted.  Please let us know if your pet is on any medication

Prior to spay-neuter surgery, we recommend the following vaccinations:

Cats

  • Less than six months: a minimum of two FVRCP vaccinations, the last at three months of age or older and at least one week before surgery.
  • More than six months: at least one FVRCP vaccination after three months of age, administered within the past year and given at least one week before surgery
  • Rabies as required by city and county regulations

Dogs

  • Less than six months: at least two DHP vaccinations, the last at four months of age or older and at least one week before surgery
  • More than six months: at least one DHP vaccination after four months of age, administered within the past year and given at least one week before surgery
  • Rabies as required by city and county regulations

If recommended vaccinations have not been performed, you put your pet at increased risk of contracting or spreading preventable diseases, for which you assume all liability.

Your pet can get recommended pre-surgery vaccines at our Mission Campus hospital, located in the Leanne B. Roberts Animal Care Center, or in the Pets Unlimited Care Center on our Pacific Heights Campus. To schedule an appointment, call 415.554.3030. Please bring vaccine records with you at the time of your appointment.

Consult with your veterinarian if you have questions about the risks and benefits of vaccination.
