On May 1, 2010, Dr. Helmers re-joined the SF SPCA Mission Campus staff as a full-time veterinarian. He previously worked as a staff veterinarian from 1991-1992 and 2000 to 2006. He worked at East Bay Veterinary Specialists and Emergency in Antioch and Walnut Creek for four years, but always remained dedicated to the SF SPCA community, commuting from Tracy, CA to cover relief shifts at our Hospital.
Dr. Helmers is known for his ever-changing name (you might remember him as Dr. Platt), his colorful tattoos but, most of all, for his excellent medical care and particular dedication to critical care services and emergency treatment.
Most of his spare time is spent studying, riding his bike around the Bay Area or at home with his wife Stefanie (also a veterinarian and SPCA alumna). Their shared household contains a menagerie of mostly rescued animals, which includes: chickens, koi and gold fish, numerous other creatures in a coral reef aquarium, horses, a pony, a burro, parrots, ducks, cats, dogs and a teacup pig named Truffles.
