The San Francisco SPCA offers students a chance to experience a busy, modern, full-service general practice, a progressive model shelter and adoption center with a shelter medicine department and a high-quality, high-volume spay-neuter clinic—all under one roof!
We have a medical staff of 15 DVMs, including a board-certified veterinary behaviorist. Veterinary externs from all over the world gain valuable experience at the SF SPCA. We host internship rotations through VCA San Francisco Veterinary Specialists and other local internship programs.
The SF SPCA S-N clinic hosts 3rd and 4th year students and veterinary interns. We provide opportunities for learning quality, high volume S-N techniques under the direct supervision of our surgical team. Externs from California veterinary schools are able to gain hands-on surgical experience. Our Community Cares Program provides experience with feral cat outreach, spay-neuter and treatment.
Veterinary Hospital and Emergency Services
Our Veterinary Hospital is open seven days per week. Interns/externs gain experience with treatment plans, client contact, gathering patient histories, surgical procedures, emergency services medicine, dentistry and diagnostics. Students are invited to participate in daily hospital rounds and continuing education events.
The shelter medicine department never closes. After spending time with staff in our state-of- the-art shelter, you will understand proper husbandry, vaccine protocols, infectious disease prevention and treatment, environmental enrichment and adopter counseling. Depending on interest and experience, students may be asked to examine and diagnose shelter animals, and develop a treatment plan overseen by a staff veterinarian.
We maintain partnerships with various Bay Area rescue organizations. Spending time with organizations like SF Animal Care and Control or Vet SOS provides invaluable rescue organization experience for students.
