Other Fees

As stated on the Consent Form signed at check-in, if medical staff needs to examine a boarded animal, additional fees may be incurred.  The doctor must make reasonable effort to give a status report to the guardian, but will treat the animal if necessary, even if unable to contact the guardian. Fees incurred will include charges for the exam, any medications used, and any procedures or treatments ordered. In the event that the animal must be admitted to the hospital, the hospital rate will replace the boarding rate.

Medical Exam $57
(Diagnostics and treatment costs vary by condition)

Requirements

Vaccines

We recommend that all boarding guests receive any required vaccine boosters at least 7 days before boarding in order for them to be maximally effective. The guardian assumes all risk, liability, and expense for illness resulting from failure to follow vaccine recommendations.

We must be able to obtain proof of current vaccination from another practice if the animal’s most recent vaccines were not given at our facility.

Cats:

Cats must be current on their FVRCP Vaccine (also known as 5-in-1, Feline Combo Vaccine, or Feline Distemper Vaccine).

Dogs:

Dogs must be current on Rabies, Bordetella, and DHP (3-in-1, Canine Combo Vaccine, or Distemper).

Prior Veterinary Examination

Every boarding guest must have been examined by an SF SPCA veterinarian within the past year. If the boarding guest has any ongoing health problems or is a senior over 10 years old, we require that the animal be examined by an SF SPCA veterinarian within six months of boarding. Depending on the guest’s condition, the veterinarian may require that the animal be examined more recently than 6 months.

Behavior and Handling

Guardians should tell us anything special about their pet’s behavior, such as whether they are shy, they don’t like other dogs, they love to be petted, or any other qualities or issues. We have a space for this information on our boarding registration form.

Animals boarding at the SF SPCA are housed separately, so we are able to accommodate dogs and cats that do not get along with other animals. Our staff must be able to safely handle our boarding guests, so animals that show aggression towards humans will be declined for boarding at our facility.

Food, Bedding, and Toys

We recommend that guardians bring some of their pet’s regular food and treats to feed them while boarding, along with instructions about the quantity and time your pet usually eats. Sudden diet and feeding changes often cause stomach upset, but we will provide Purina food and treats if the guardian is not able to bring the pet’s regular food.

The SF SPCA provides ample comfortable bedding and safe toys and requests that guardians not leave any toys, bedding or other objects with their pet. It is important that we can wash any bedding that becomes soiled and we cannot track personal items given our volume of laundry. We can suggest that the owner hold one of our towels for a few minutes in order to leave their scent on it and use that instead of personal items. If the guardian insists we use the bedding they provide, we will try to keep the bedding with the pet but if it becomes soiled it may end up in the laundry and become lost or be returned to them wrapped in a plastic bag still soiled.

Medications

If your pet requires regular medication during their stay, we ask that you bring all medications in their original, labeled containers.
