Yukari Sakura “Dogs and Cats are Our Friends”
Yukari Sakura has been painting since she was nine years old when she studied oil painting with a private instructor. When those classes ended, she continued to teach herself from “how to draw” books and by copying Anime cartoons. She has been attending Creativity Explored, a non-profit arts organization where artists with developmental disabilities create, exhibit, and sell art, since 2011. During the last few years she has developed a visionary style that combines animation from popular culture with her observations from life. Her painting expresses her concerns about the well being of dogs and cats, climate change, endangered species, and good nutrition for everyone.
Sakura’s series, Dogs and Cats are our Friends is based on photographs that the artist took on a recent visit to the San Francisco SPCA Adoption Center. She also relied on her memory and imagination to create paintings that depict dogs and cats in “elegant backgrounds.” These coloristic paintings condense information gained from years of study and invention, and their apparent simplification brings clarity and purpose to her statement.
Sakura hopes that these paintings will help to enlighten others to the plight of animals in need. She hopes that people will adopt animals from shelters and provide the love and care they deserve. Sakura envisions a world where animals and people live in harmony, and where those that are vulnerable are cared for and respected. These joyful paintings offer a glimpse toward that possibility.
The Yukari Sakura Exhibit, “Dogs and Cats are Our Friends,” is a collaboration between Creativity Explored and the San Francisco SPCA.
