| The Story of Sido Because she feared no one would properly care for her dog after she passed away, a San Francisco woman stipulated in her will that upon her death the dog be humanely put to sleep. That dog's name was Sido.
When the woman died in 1979, the friendly 11-year old sheltie mix was put in temporary care of The San Francisco SPCA. But the Society refused to release Sido to those who wanted to carry out the terms of the will, and instead fought for Sido's life.
The public rallied to Sido's cause, and the crusade spilled over to the state legislature. After six months of legislative wrangling, a new law was passed and the precedent-setting animal rights case was decided.
The little dog's life was spared. Sido spent another five glorious years with a loving family that cared for her just as much as her original owner had.
To give more pets like Sido the chance for the life they deserve, The San Francisco SPCA established the innovative Sido Program in her name.
