Police Horse Retirement Ranch
The Society provides all horses retired from the San Francisco Police Department with free stabling, feeding, farrier, grooming and veterinary services for life at beautiful country ranches.
The San Francisco SPCA began providing for the retirement of City work horses in 1918. Before then, former San Francisco Police and Fire Department horses were sold at public auction, and many of the City's senior equine citizens ended their years of service bound for slaughter.
Today all horses from the SFPD Mounted Unit live out their retirement years amid the lush pastures and cooling ponds of a retirement ranch in southern Sonoma County at no cost to taxpayers.
Stabling, feeding, grooming, farrier and veterinary services are provided thanks to SF/SPCA members' donations for the horses perpetual maintenance. |
