As of May 1, 2010, Dr. Helmers has re-joined the SF SPCA staff as a full-time veterinarian. Dr. Helmers previously worked as a staff veterinarian here from 1991-1992 and 2000 to 2006. He has worked at East Bay Veterinary Specialists and Emergency in Antioch and Walnut Creek for the past four years, but has always remained dedicated to the SF SPCA community, continuing to cover relief shifts at our Hospital, commuting from Tracy to come in to work with us.
Dr. Helmers is known for his ever-changing name (you might remember him as Dr. Platt), his colorful tattoos but, most of all, for his excellent medical care and particular dedication to stellar critical care and emergency treatment.
Most of his spare time is spent on a bicycle going for long rides around the Bay Area or at home with his wife Stefanie (also a veterinarian and SPCA alumna) and their menagerie of mostly rescued animals, which includes chickens, koi and gold fish, numerous other creatures in a coral reef aquarium, 2 horses, a pony, a burro, 4 parrots, 3 ducks, 7 cats and 5 dogs.
