Just like humans, dogs and cats need regular dental care. Plaque, which is an accumulation of bacteria, can build up and eventually cause infection or loose teeth. In addition to loose teeth, infection under the gum line can spread to the liver, kidneys, and heart. We recommend regular brushing to remove plaque build-up.
But periodically, even with regular brushing, dogs and cats require a dental procedure for a more rigorous, comprehensive cleaning or to treat periodontal disease, fractured teeth, or oral masses.
We take a comprehensive approach to dental care at our state-of-the-art hospital. Every SF SPCA dental exam includes all of the following:
Depending on the needs of your pet, we may also perform the following, if required:
Dental procedures at the SF SPCA always take place under anesthesia in order for the veterinarian to provide the most thorough and humane oral care possible, and to ensure that no dental problems are overlooked.
If you want to schedule a dental procedure, we require an initial examination with a veterinarian, who will assess what kind of dental procedure your pet needs, and will provide you with a cost estimate.
