| DOG DAY ON THE BAY SAILS TO SUCCESS
It's something that most dogs only dream about - the chance to chart a course that takes them beyond the local off-leash dog park to the far horizon. But on May 7, 2006, more than 200 canine mariners commandeered a boat and sailed away on a nautical adventure of fun, food and fundraising.
Human guests dined on an array of delectable dishes from the abundant buffet, while there was a Doggy Diner buffet, sponsored by Happy Tail Ale, for all sea dogs. The Sloat Garden Center supplied fresh, green turf for the special "poop deck," where pooches could retire for those necessary bathroom breaks. Other amenities and services included deck railings covered with special netting, dishes of fresh water on all decks, an SF/SPCA veterinarian and assistant on board in case of emergencies (there were none), as well as a group of experienced SF/SPCA dog monitors to keep an eye on the canine crew. Entertainment during the cruise included a lively demonstration by the staff and dogs from The SF/SPCA Hearing Dog Program, a silent auction, and on-board shopping at the Puppy Pleasures Boutique. Dog Day on the Bay has rapidly become one of The SF/SPCA's most popular fundraising events. This year's cruise, which raised almost $12,000 to benefit the shelter dogs and cats, practically doubled in size from the maiden voyage in 2005. It made such a splash that The SF/SPCA is now forging ahead full steam with plans for its third Dog Day on the Bay in 2007. TO ORDER 4X6 COLOR PRINTS OF THESE PHOTOS for a $5 donation each: |
