The month of April is Prevention of Animal Cruelty Month, aimed at heightening awareness about animal abuse and neglect. And, on April 18 the SF/SPCA celebrates its 138th birthday. To mark both occasions, The SF/SPCA and its partner, San Francisco Animal Care & Control, are collecting donated pet food for the animal companions of San Francisco's homeless.

Sometimes, the only friends homeless people have are their pets, and the bond between these men, women and children and their animal companions is very strong; this supportive relationship can often be the only dependable aspect of their lives. The pets of the homeless are general well cared for and well fed, and the food drive will help to ensure that this continues.

The Pet Food Drive begins on Saturday, April 1 and ends Sunday, May 7. Pet food collection bins have been placed in three sites at The SF/SPCA - Maddie's lobby, the Spay/Neuter Clinic lobby and the Hospital lobby. Bins are also located at SF/ACC. People are asked to bring donations of new and unopened dog and cat food to any of these sites. The food will be given to the Haight-Ashbury Food Program and Vet-SOS, organizations which both work with the homeless.

Help us make life a little better for the best friends of homeless people. When we help these animals we also give hope to their human companions.
