First you should conduct a search in your neighborhood.
Call or whistle, especially in the evenings when it is quiet.
Drive around the neighborhood - your dog may recognize the sound of your car.
If your pet is injured or frightened, it may be hiding.
You are also encouraged to put up posters in your neighborhood with a photo and description of your pet. (Do not put all details on the poster - unfortunately there are extortionists who may claim to have your pet. If someone does call, be sure to have a couple questions that they can answer only if they have your pet.)
Alert your neighbors by going door-to-door with flyers.
Next, you must go to SF/ACC and file a Lost Pet Report.
You should also see all the animals they are holding - only you can identify your pet.
You should go to the shelter every day. ACC will hold animals for 3-4 days before making them available for adoption.
Call ACC's Lost Pet Hotline every day for a recorded message and a partial listing of animals impounded. Dial LOST PET (567-8738).
Keep checking with the shelter - and try not to get too discouraged - your pet may not be found for several weeks.
You can visit the shelter Thursday to Tuesday from Noon - 5:30pm and Wednesdays from Noon - 7pm.
