YOUTH HELPING ANIMALS
| Nobody made a greater mistake than he who did nothing because he could only do a little. ~Edmund Burke |
Help animals in our community today! Here are some ways you can do so:
- Spay or neuter your pet and encourage others to do the same. This is the biggest step in controlling pet overpopulation. In 7 years one unsprayed female cat and her offspring can produce 420,000 new cats. In 6 years a dog and her young can produce 67,000 dogs. Too many animals, not enough homes.
- Adopt a shelter pet instead of buying one and let others know that a shelter is the best place to find their best friend. Many wonderful dogs, cats, rabbits, rats, and other small animals are waiting in shelters for you to bring them home and be welcomed into your family.
- Be an animal advocate, speaking out for those who cannot speak for themselves. Tell your friends about the importance of being kind to animals.
- Donate to your local shelters. Initiate a towel and blanket-drive at your school.
- Cut apart the plastic rings from six-packs so they cannot be a danger to wildlife
- Recycle anything you can to create a clean environment for people and animals.
- Ensure your pet's safe return if it gets out of the house by putting an ID tag, license tag, and/or microchip on it. 90% of lost pets without ID do not find their way back home.
- Enroll in a pet first-aid class and learn how to carry out medical treatments, deal with medical emergencies, perform CPR, and stop bleeding.
- Appreciate wildlife and learn more about the it; but please don't approach wild animals.
- Leave room for urban wildlife habitats in your own yard by providing birds with feeders and a bird bath; put out appropriate squirrel food.
- Be on the lookout for animals who need help and call for help. When animals roam, whether lost or abandoned, they face extreme risks, and your call can help bring them to safety. Never tolerate animal cruelty - report it to your local animal control agency.
- Volunteer to help feed, care for, and manage a feral cat colony in your neighborhood.
- Treat your animals as you would like to be treated. Our pets love and trust us, counting on us to take good care of them. Wildlife depends on us to lookout for their wellbeing at to be considerate of the areas where they live. Give back to animals who brighten our days and help teach us how to be happy, compassionate, and thoughtful people.
