SF/SPCA Animal Hospital

The San Francisco Animal Hospital is one of the finest animal hospitals in the Bay Area.

It has 9 veterinarians and the latest equipment, and currently treats more than 25,000 animals each year. The hospital provides free, high-quality medical care for the most acutely ill and seriously injured animals in our shelter. In the fiscal year 2005-2006 over 600 shelter cats and dogs were treated at the hospital at a cost of $580,577.82. Many of these animals received surgical and medical services that are not routinely provided to shelter animals.

The hospital owes its existence to a $30,000 gift made in 1924 by Ms. Marguerite Doe Courtney, who wanted the San Francisco SPCA to build a first rate animal hospital where no animal would be turned away because of it's owners inability to pay.

The San Francisco/SPCA has built comprehensive assistance programs for the animals of needy San Francisco residents based on Ms. Courtney's original vision. In fact it has expanded the hospital's charitable services to include:

  • The Pet-A-Care Program providing the most comprehensive charitable program in the nation for spayed and neutered pets of low-income seniors.

  • The Pets of Homeless Program providing free spay-neuter surgery for needy pets of homeless people.

  • The Emergency Veterinary Care Fund providing urgent medical treatment for pets hit by cars, suffering seizures or heart attacks, or other medical crises. Interest-free financing is available for qualifying owners of low income with spayed or neutered animals. Must be San Francisco resident.

  • A Free First Medical Exam for any pet adopted from The SF/SPCA Shelter (in association with the San Francisco Veterinary Medical Association).
