SF/SPCA Hearing Dogs This Doorbell means
more than you think!
In a recent letter to The SF/SPCA Hearing Dog Program, Clarence's daughter wrote with some very interesting news about her dad's Hearing Dog, Ridges. She writes:
"Wanted to drop you a note to give you an update on my dad's Hearing Dog, Ridges. What a companion she's turned out to be, more than any of us realized when she was first placed with my folks. Recently, my mom was in bed recovering from surgery. She rarely gets out of bed except to eat and go to her doctor appointments. Dad, of course, is her full time caretaker. I had quite a laugh when visiting and we thought mom was asleep. The doorbell rang and Ridges alerted dad as usual, but dad told me to go see what my mom wanted. It wasn't the doorbell at all! Because dad is usually in another room, he rigged a button for my mom, similar to that which they use in a hospital. The button, when pressed, rings the doorbell. Enter Ridges! She alerts him and he knows mom is calling. Peace of mind for him and peace of mind for her.
Ridges has been his constant companion. They sit together on the couch and watch TV. She senses my mom's illness and sneaks into the bedroom to "visit." Ridges has been more than just a Hearing Dog for them. They love that dog! |
