Maddie's Pet Adoption Center at The SF/SPCA will once again host 'Bunny Saturday.' The Save-A-Bunny rescue organization, in conjunction with San Francisco Animal Care & Control, will be visiting with a hutch-full of adorable rabbits. Rabbits make excellent pets, but you can't just stick a rabbit in a little hutch with a few carrots and greens and let it go at that. They need more care and attention than many people realize, and they are not good companion animals for young children:
- Rabbits are not good "starter" pets for youngsters; a child's natural exuberance is too stressful for a rabbit, and many rabbits end up with broken legs or backs when young children drop them.
- Rabbits are ground-loving, prey animals that feel frightened and insecure when they're held and restrained, and they're not passive and cuddly.
- Rabbits are not low maintenance pets: they need space, plenty of exercise, playtime and regular socialization, and a special diet.
- The average lifespan of an indoor rabbit is 7 - 10 years.
