Animal Rights and Protection
The SF/SPCA supports HSUS ballot measure
The San Francisco SPCA is lending its support to a state-wide campaign to prevent cruelty to farm animals in California. The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) is aiming to put a measure on the November 2008 ballot that would phase out certain cruel confinement practices: tiny gestation crates for breeding pigs, the battery cage for egg-laying hens, restrictive “veal crates” for calves. The HSUS campaign aims to collect 650,000 signatures in five short months to qualify this initiative for the ballot. Click here to read more and to lend your support to this important initiative.
The San Francisco SPCA promotes respect for the rights and needs of animals though educational efforts, including Humane Education Department programs and public information materials on the proper care and treatment of dogs and cats.
The Humane Education program brings animals and information on their rights and needs into the classrooms and lives of San Francisco schoolchildren. It also provides educational resource materials for teachers and welcomes field trips to The SF/SPCA, where children get a tour of the facilities and an educational program on animal-related topics. Each year, Humane Education runs an extensive Summer Camp Program with five-day Dog and Cat Camps for youngsters 8 - 15.
The SF/SPCA does not investigate animal cruelty cases. That work is done by local animal control agencies. (In San Francisco: San Francisco Animal Care and Control, 554-6364, www.ci.sf.ca.us./acc).
