Animals on Airplanes
 |
An early summer airplane flight from Seattle to New Jersey turned fatal for two dogs this May. Nioka, a Siberian Husky, and Cleveland, a Pointer, were secured in airline-approved carriers, and loaded into the airplane's cargo hold. Upon arrival, both dogs were discovered unconscious. The efforts of a quick-thinking police officer who knew CPR revived one dog, but were unsuccessful for the other who later died. Unfortunately, situations such as this are far too common.
The Air Transport Association estimates that about 5,000 animals are either lost, injured or killed every year on our nation's airplanes. While the vast majority arrive safely at their destination, serious and consistent problems have been documented on virtually every major airline.
